Osteopathy

The maintenance of good mechanical function is essential to good health. Problems in the framework of the body such as over-tight muscles or misaligned joints can disturb the circulatory system or nerves to any part of the body, and affect any aspect of health. These dysfunctions can lead to not only aches and pains in joints and muscles, but also to disturbances in the internal organs and the way they work. Osteopaths work to restore the musculoskeletal system of the body to a state of balance and harmony.

The treatment involves hands-on methods such as joint mobilisation and manipulation, harmonic and soft tissue techniques such as muscle stretching and massage. This helps to release tissue tension, increase circulation and correct postural alignment, to promote self-healing. Osteopathy can be helpful whether the injury or discomfort is recent or long-term.

At the initial consultation a medical history will be taken as part of an osteopathic examination and if treatment is deemed suitable, this will start at the first visit. You may be asked to undress to underwear to reveal the area to be examined or treated (bring a pair of loose shorts if preferred). You may be given advice on diet, posture and lifestyle, and will usually be given exercises to do at home to support the healing process. In some cases, regular maintenance treatments can help prevent recurrence of pain or dysfunction. Typically a course of three to five treatments is required, although long-standing problems often require more.
